Why the work matters

ARTIST STATMENT 


I am interested in the moment when structure begins to break down — and what becomes possible in its place.


My work begins with systems: grids, geometry, organic shapes, architectural forms, fragments, and images. I then interrupt them through gesture, layering, collage, and material experimentation. What begins as something constructed gradually becomes less certain, allowing intuition and unexpected relationships to shape the work.


This process reflects a broader question that runs through my practice: How do we reconstruct meaning, identity, and belonging when the structures that once defined us are interrupted?


Through shifts between order and disruption, I explore how memory and perception continually reshape our understanding of ourselves and the spaces we inhabit.

 

How I work

ARTIST PRACTICE



My practice investigates what happens when systems of order are interrupted. Working across mixed media, including drawing, collage, photography, and painting. I build compositions from geometric structures, architectural references, and fragmented forms, then subjects them to gesture, material experimentation, and chance.


Rooted in graphic design and visual communication, my process moves between construction and disruption. Structure provides a starting point, but interruption allows new relationships to emerge, between form, memory, perception, and place.


Who I am

BIOGRAPHY


E Gonzee (Eduardo Mejia Gonzalez) is a multidisciplinary visual artist, graphic designer, and photographer based in Washington, D.C. He works across mixed media, including drawing, collage, photography, and painting.


Informed by his background in graphic design and visual communication, his work brings together geometric frameworks, architectural forms, fragmented imagery, and intuitive mark-making to explore memory, perception, identity, and place. Across his practice, constructed systems are transformed through material experimentation and gesture, creating a dialogue between control and unpredictability.


E Gonzee’s work has been exhibited throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, including at DC Arts Center, The Art League, and Sitar Arts Center.
